In Alaska, a little extra space can make a big difference, especially when it comes to parking, snow removal, and navigating driveways during the winter months.
For one Palmer homeowner, an unused section of their property offered an opportunity to improve both safety and convenience. With proper site preparation and grading, the MatCor crew transformed an overgrown area into a functional parking pad. The new space provides room to turn around without backing onto a busy street, additional parking for visitors, and a designated area for snow storage during the winter.
The homeowner needed more room to safely turn around in their driveway. Without enough space, they were forced to back onto a busy street whenever they left home. They also wanted additional parking for visitors.
An overgrown section of the property offered a possible solution, but preparing the area required more than simply adding gravel. Chest-high grass covered the site, a large tree stump stood in the middle, and an underground power line ran directly through the proposed parking area. Each obstacle required careful planning and site preparation.
With winter approaching, the homeowner also wanted the project completed before snowfall, giving their snowplow operator a designated place to push and store snow.
Solution: MatCor's team started by clearing the overgrown area and preparing the ground for the new parking pad. One of the biggest challenges was working around the underground power line. The crew carefully exposed the line and lowered it several inches to provide additional clearance and reduce the risk of damage during the project.
Once the site was prepared, the team graded the area to create a more usable parking and turnaround space. They also incorporated drainage improvements to help keep water from collecting along the pathway to the house, reducing the potential for standing water and icy conditions as temperatures drop.
What was once an overgrown, unused section of the property is now a functional extension of the driveway. The homeowner has room to safely turn around without backing onto a busy street, additional parking for visitors, and a designated area for snow storage during the winter months. Improved drainage is another benefit, helping direct water away from a frequently used walkway.
This project is a great example of how a relatively simple improvement can make a big difference. Sometimes, making better use of the space you already have is all it takes to solve several everyday challenges.
Whether you're adding a parking pad, improving your driveway, or creating more usable space, proper grading involves more than simply leveling the ground.
In Alaska, heavy snowfall, spring breakup, and freeze-thaw cycles make proper drainage and site preparation especially important. Planning ahead can help protect your property and make outdoor spaces easier to maintain year-round.
Here are five key benefits of proper grading:
Every Alaska property has its own challenges, but even small improvements can make everyday life easier. From creating additional parking to improving drainage and preparing for winter, proper site preparation helps you get more out of your property.
